STAMFORD, Conn. - The children at Cloonan Middle School got to hear from a World War II veteran firsthand as he told of his experiences in the Battle of the Bulge and the capture of German rocket scientist Wernher von Braun. Monday's ceremony was an early observance of Veterans Day, which falls on Friday, Nov. 11.
“If we ever lost World War II, they wouldn’t be here,” Bridgeport resident Joseph Minto before Monday’s ceremony, referring to the students.
Minto, who served as a machine gunner in the 71st Infantry Regiment of the 44th Division, recited the Pledge of Allegiance with the students and staff before telling his war memories. Minto earned three bronze stars, a purple heart and the Legion of Honor from the French Government for his service, a statement said.
“It’s really important for the kids to hear firsthand experiences,” said Cloonan Principal David Tate, who wants to hold the event annually.
The school showed its appreciation to Minto by showing YouTube videos of American soldiers and war memorials. In addition, the choir performed the National Anthem, and the band played several patriotic songs, including “Yankee Doodle” and “You’re a Grand Old Flag.”
“It’s a great tribute to me and all of the veterans,” Minto said of the ceremony at Cloonan on Monday afternoon.
