STAMFORD, Conn. — Students of Stamford’s Roxbury Elementary School learned about fire safety Friday morning when they got a special visit from members of the Turn of River Volunteer Fire Department.
Frank Maduri, one of the four firefighters who led the presentations, told the students if they think their home is on fire, the first thing they should do is to get out of the house and call for help. They should leave all of their belongings behind.
“I don’t care about your blankets, your pets or any of your stuff,” he said, explaining that the sooner the fire department is called the better.
The students were also told not to hide if they are trapped inside. They should go to windows and begin yelling so firefighters can see them from outside. If the window is inaccessible, they should remain next to a wall, which is where firefighters check first.
“If you do what we say then we can find you and get you to safety,” Maduri told the students.
The firefighters also said that they still have some 500 smoke detectors to give away. They told the students that each home should have smoke and carbon monoxide detectors.
