Fifth-grader Joe Kavulich of Holy Spirit School in Stamford won the St. Thomas Aquinas Award last week for excellence in academics and Christ-like behavior as modeled by the saint.

Kavulich received his award Feb. 10 at the “Breakfast of Champions,” where he was given a medal blessed by Bishop William Lori of the Diocese of Bridgeport and a certificate marking his accomplishment.

Mrs. Patricia Torchen, principal of Holy Spirit School, and Kavulich’s parents, Maris and Judith, accompanied him to the event, where thirty-seven Diocesan schools were represented. Bishop Lori explained to the students that St. Thomas Aquinas was a holy priest and religious philosopher and theologian. The bishop said he was encouraged by each student’s faith and virtue as examples to their peers.
