A Holy Spirit School fourth-grader won first place in the Knights of Columbus Annual Regional Spelling Bee on Sunday after successfully spelling the word “initiative.”

Cynthia Liscek will advance to the state championship, scheduled for April 10 at St. Thomas Seminary in Bloomfield. The competition is open to students of Connecticut Catholic Schools in fourth, fifth and sixth grades. Another Holy Spirit student, fifth-grader Juliet Parker, also competed in the bee.
