Alex Lerner reached out and grabbed attention with his science project at Holy Spirit School’s Science Fair on Wednesday. The Stamford third-grader built a remote-controlled mechanical arm, which impressed even him with its maneuvering capabilities.
“It came out much better than I expected,” Alex said as he lifted a few small items with the arm.
Alex, who has always been mechanically inclined, said it was fun and educational to build the arm. He spent about 28 hours total working on it, most of it on building and then rebuilding the base of the arm, Alex said.
Every student at Holy Spirit from pre-kindergarten through the fifth graders participated in the science fair, with the younger children working on group projects and the older ones doing individual projects, science teacher Sandy Lefler said. The older students were given a list of topics to make a choice and then they had to create the project at home, meeting deadlines Lefler set along the way.
The experiments covered a range of topics, including the extinction of the dinosaurs, raising chickens, what dogs can see and hear, and much more.
