Michael Sasser Jr., a student at Holy Spirit School in Stamford, will make a bald statement Saturday when he has his head shaved in solidarity with children who have cancer.

The New Canaan Fire Department is sponsoring the event for St. Baldrick's Foundation, a volunteer-driven charity committed to funding research to help infants, children, teens and young adults fighting childhood cancers.

Sasser and 19 other participants are being sponsored to submit to a shearing. So far, Sasser has raised $850 for the cause, and all the participants together $7,800. They need another $12,200 to reach their goal of $20,000.

Donations can be made at the St. Baldrick's website. The fundraiser starts at 5:30 p.m. Saturday at New Canaan fire headquarters, located at 60 Main St.
