STAMFORD, Conn. - Just five days after getting blown out by St. Joseph of Trumbull, the Stamford High girls basketball team turned the tables in the conference playoffs. St. Joseph's leading scorer, Nancy Stablein, suffered a knee injury on the opening play of the game and the Cadets never recovered.
Stamford led from wire to wire, stunning second-ranked St. Joseph in the conference quarterfinals, 44-25.
The Black Knights dominated the first half, as St. Joseph could not get over the loss of its team leader. Stamford held the Cadets to just five points in the entire first half, going into the break with a 26-5 lead.
Kelsey Cognetta led the way for Stamford with a game-high 18 points. Kelsey Santagata was not far behind with 13 points of her own. Stamford also shot a solid 66 percent from the free-throw line, helping build the insurmountable lead.
Stamford was the only underdog to win in Saturday's quarterfinals. The Black Knights will take on third-seeded Trumbull on Tuesday in the conference semifinals at Fairfield Ludlowe at 6 p.m.
