Stamford Sets Tax Rate Over Couple's Protest

Milton and Marion Drexler were unhappy with the tax rate approved by Stamford’s Board of Finance Tuesday night. But not because their property taxes will rise. Rather, they were disturbed because even with an increase the city’s spending plan does away with the Commission on Aging.

The new property tax rate will be $17.37 per $1,000 of assessed value. It is based on a gross tax levy increase of 1.75 percent. The average property tax rate was $17.04 per $1000 of assessed value for this past year. The mill rate break down by district is as follows: A -- 17.49, B -- 17.10, ...

Thriftiness Pays Off for Stamford Schools

The Stamford Board of Education’s $230 million budget for 2011-12 sailed through the Board of Finance Thursday night hitting only a few ripples. The BofF approved the budget, 4-2, with member Bob Kolenberg praising the school board for keeping costs in check.   

“To the Board of Education, moving forward please do the same thing,” Kolenberg said.

The budget approved by the Board of Finance calls for an increase of 2.79 percent, or just over $6.2 million.
