Trinity Pitcher Spoils Stamford's Senior Day

The day started with smiles for Stamford High School’s baseball team. Thirteen seniors were honored before the game, but once Trinity Catholic pitcher Chris Neuscheler took the mound the smiles went away as he led his team to a 6-0 win.

“This is the best I’ve thrown all year,” Neuscheler said of his 10-strikeout, complete-game performance Saturday.

Ann McAuliffe, Sang at Radio City Music Hall

Former Stamford resident Ann Dalton Williams McAuliffe died on May 12 in Wilbraham, Mass. Born and raised in Stamford, she most recently resided in Springfield, Massachusetts.

A graduate of Stamford High School and the Katharine Gibbs School of New York, McAuliffe began singing locally in community churches. Her singing then led her to Summer Stock Theater in Cape Cod, and then to New York where she performed at Radio City Music Hall and The Roxy.

Stamford Native Eleanor Bowlby, Former Bookkeeper

Eleanor Janet (Karl) Bowlby died May 12 after a battle with lung cancer. The 87-year-old Danbury resident was born in Stamford and later lived in Norwalk.

After graduating from Stamford High School in 1942, she went on to work as a bookkeeper for various companies, including the Stamford Yacht Club, Machlett Laboratories and Pitney Bowes. She was also involved in the community, helping such organizations as the Norwalk Women’s Club, the Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts in Stamford, and Trinity Lutheran Church in Stamford.

Roger A. Petrone Sr., Retired Stamford Cop

Roger A. Petrone Sr., a retired Stamford police officer, died at the age of 67 on May 2 in Myrtle Beach, S.C. He was born Sept. 13, 1943 in Stamford.

After graduating from Stamford High School in 1961, Petrone attended Iona College. He also served in the U.S. Navy and went on to have a 37-year career in the Stamford Police Department, reaching the rank of sergeant.

He enjoyed vacationing in Aruba and had a fondness for motorcycles. Before he retired, Petrone took a motorcycle trip from Connecticut to Alaska.

Drum Roll: Stamford Percussion Group Is Among Best

Stamford High School music teacher George Beratis plays jazz music, but he had never directed a percussion group before this school year. Despite his lack of experience, he and the school’s Winter Percussion Band finished 10th at the WGI Percussion World Championships.

“It was really cool,” Beratis said of the competition held April 14 to 16 in Dayton, Ohio. “It really sank in during the beginning of the national ceremony when the announcer said, ‘The bands here are the best of the best.'"

Stamford Students Called Out for Honors

Many Stamford students were honored Tuesday night for a variety of achievements by the Board of Education and Superintendent Joshua Starr.

Three Stamford teams finished atop of the Connecticut Odyssey of the Mind Competition at the end of March. The Rippfield team, from Rippowam and Scofield schools, won the competition. Stark School finished second, and Cloonan was third. The Rippfield and Stark teams qualified for the World Finals to be held at the end of May in Maryland. Oscar 'Goose' Thomas, 79, Retired Welder

Stamford High School graduate Oscar “Goose” Thomas died on Saturday, April 16, at the age of 79. He was born on Jan. 31, 1932, in Winston-Salem, North Carolina.

The Korean War veteran worked as a certified welder until he retired from Peabody Engineering. He was also employed with Consolidated Diesel.

Stephen F. McGrath, 48, Landscaper

Stephen McGrath, 48, a lifelong resident of Stamford, died on Friday, April 15.

The Stamford High School graduate earned his degree in landscape architecture and design from the Springfield Technical College. He worked as a landscape contractor and for the Stamford Parks and Recreation.

Stamford High Steamrolls Bassick, 23-0

Designated hitter Zach Lyman and the rest of Stamford High School’s baseball team went on a scoring frenzy against Bridgeport’s Bassick High School Thursday afternoon in Stamford. The Black Knights got off to a quick, 4-0, start and did not look back, crushing Bassick, 23-0.

Along with patience and timely hitting, the Stamford offense took advantage of Bassick mistakes in the field to pile up the runs.

The Black Knights’ pitchers were in command and shut down their opponents from the start.

Stamford Kids To Sing at Lincoln Center

Katherine Breen and the rest of the Stamford High School Madrigals will skip school Friday and head into New York. The 20 students will perform at Alice Tully Hall at Lincoln Center as part of the American Music Salutes concert honoring the 10th anniversary of 9/11.

“At the moment they’re very excited,” Gloria Sinaguglia, the Madrigals’ advisor, said of the students’ feelings about singing at Lincoln Center for Performing Arts.

Stamford Records Low Voter Turnout

Few Stamford residents living in the Glenbrook and Cove neighborhoods had gone out to vote in the special election for the vacancy in the 148th District House. By 3 p.m. Tuesday, slightly more than 900 people had voted, Stamford’s registrar of voters office said. Polls are open until 8 p.m.

Each day in the spring, Stamford High School students Michael Buzzeo and Trevor Kane wake up, go to school, go to baseball practice, go home, eat dinner, do homework and go to bed. And even with that busy schedule, they feel they are the lucky ones.

Maurice Ruggiero, Korean War Veteran

Maurice “Babe” Ruggiero died April 2 at the age of 80. Born in Stamford, Ruggiero attended Stamford High School before enlisting in the Army in 1949. He served in the Korean War and was awarded the Purple Heart.
