How does your dog spend most of his days? Sleeping, if he’s anything like mine. And given that most dogs spend so much time snoozing, finding them a cozy napping spot that isn't an eyesore is a high priority for dog-owners.

Dog beds come in all shapes and sizes. You’ll find fancy beds that look like mini sofas – perfect for the dog that thinks she’s a person and will only sit on “people furniture.” If your dog is getting arthritic, consider a dog bed with an orthopedic mattress, like Tempurpedic. Make sure you get the right size for your dog. Chihuahas will feel lost in a Rottweiler-sized bed.

Investing in a dog bed with a removable cover will help keep your house clean. If you can find a bed with an ultrasuede cover, go for it. Ultrasuede is a miracle fabric, hard-wearing and easy to keep clean.

A local store with a great selection of dog beds is Orvis. The retail store is in Darien, next to Trader Joe's and there's an Orvis Warehouse store  in the Shop Rite shopping plaza in Norwalk. You can also check out the choices at Petco (this is the place for a heated dog bed) and PetSmart. And if you're an online shopper try Overstock.com.
