Doris Sandow Callahan, a longtime Stamford resident, died on Tuesday, April 5, at the Bethel Health Care Center at the age of 81. She was born in Stamford and lived there until moving to Newtown with her husband, Robert, in 2006.

Callahan attended Stamford schools and graduated from Stamford High School in 1947. She and Robert were married in 1951 and would have celebrated their 60th anniversary on April 14.

She loved reading and traveling. Her travels took her to such places as California, Hawaii, Ireland, England and Germany. Callahan also loved getting together with her family.

In addition to her husband, she is survived by her six children, Barbara Lee and her husband, Barry, Beth Callahan, Robin Callahan and her husband, David Cooper, Timothy Callahan and his wife, Laura, Terrence Callahan and his wife, Kelly, and Robert Callahan and his wife, Carrie; her sister, Marian Catino; her brother, William Sandow, and 18 grandchildren. Callahan was predeceased by two sisters, Joan Harrington and Elizabeth Callahan.

Calling hours are Thursday, April 7, from 4 to 8 p.m. at the Leo P. Gallagher & Son Funeral Home, 2900 Summer St. Stamford. A Mass will be celebrated Friday, April 8, at 11 a.m. at St. Cecilia Roman Catholic Church, 1184 Newfield Ave., Stamford. Burial will follow at St. John’s Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers the family has asked that donations be made in Callahan’s name to Americares, 88 Hamilton Ave., Stamford, and the Smile Train, PO Box 96231, Washington, D.C. 20090.
